Best Latin Albums of 2007

A few weeks ago a friend at work who is in the business and is part of the selective process at Coachella asked me if there was any kind of consensus on the very best Latin albums of 2007. There were many lists on the web, most of them from incompetent bloggers who either don’t have a radical approach to critical analysis or simply are blinded to good music vision. Even though we are getting close to 2009 I asked our main editor Carlos Reyes to help me out and put together a list at least from the members of this club. He suggested that we should consider lists from other valuable people; I am deeply shocked how good the overall list is. Indie music from other parts of the world seem to be so ahead when it comes to reviews and music blogs, we are very happy to gather a small community of sharp writers, professional music journalists and radio hosts in this consensus of the music of 2007. Hopefully, we’ll keep doing this for the upcoming years. Also, hopefully we will broaden invitations so that we can cover all the music from Latin America.

Honorable Mentions:

The list was calculated on a priority count, which means that a critic's #1 album got 10 points, #2 got 9 points, # 3 got 8 points, etc. Plus the amount of participants that included the album on their top 10 list.

Well, this list is amazing to me. As you can we have talked about most of these albums at some point. Probably because at least from my part these are the people I trust the most.

I was hoping the guys from La Onda Tropical would send their lists, they are busy, but still, most of these albums appear on their best of 2007 post.

VERY surprised about Triangulo de Amor Bizarro and Porter entering the top 10. A lot of support for spanish acts, probably because there are so much better blogs about music in spain than in any other place in Latinoamerica.

Calle 13! Manu Chao!, Cafeta!, Austin!, Porter!, Calamaro!, Draco!, Triangulo!, El Cantante!, Ibrahim Ferrer!

Great list seriously, when Jean send me the list for me to do make the pictures I was very pleased. I was waiting for Maria Rita to show up at least in the honorable mentions or something.

"As you can we" is supposed to say "As you can see" lol.

And yeah, Spain isn't in Latinoamerica, but who cares.

A great list guys... I was surprised to see Calle 13 in so many lists. It's good to see that the blogs and the web are willing to break the genre walls. So many good artists are neglected because they have elements of reggeaton or too much heavy metal. Anyway. great job!

If you want to, I can send my list to you. Si no, para el próximo año será. Saludos!

Julio Meza.

Damn! I'm so sorry I didn't send in my list on time... But the fact that I read this post before the e-mail, gives you an idea how horribly behind I am on answering my mails ;)

Here's my list anyway, though I don't think it would have changed the top 10 a lot. Just a little more tropical ;)

1 Calle 13 - Residente o Visitante
2 Café Tacuba - Sino
3 Juan Luis Guerra - La Llave de mi Corazón
4 Marc Anthony - El Cantante
5 Ibrahim Ferrer - Mi Sueño
6 Spanish Harlem Orchestra - United We Swing

8 Manu Chao - La Radiolina
9 Tego Calderon - El Abayarde Contra-Ataca
10 Bajofondo - Mar Dulce

Thanks to all of you!

Jose Luis & Chapin, seems like the list would have not changed much. I appreciate you guys sharing your lists anyway. Sorry for not organizing this thing better (when it comes to dates).

Paulo Correa said...

Gran Idea Jean.
